What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years. The term ‘herbs’ in Chinese Medicine encompasses not only plant material, but also minerals and a limited number of marine and animal products. Herbs are used to address imbalances within meridian-organ systems. There are many options available in administration of Chinese herbs. It is important to note that some herbs are incompatible with other medications and herbal medicines. Please let your practitioner know of all medications, herbs and supplements so an appropriate and safe treatment can be formulated.
Raw herbs
Most commonly recommended. A bag of herbs is boiled; the remaining liquid is called a decoction or tea. Very strong tasting, but very flexible. Your prescription will be a combination of anywhere from 3, up to 20 herbs from our extensive dispensary (we have over 300 individual herbs on hand).
In addition to oral administration, herbs can be used as a wash or soak for external application directly to an affected area.

Granules & Powdered Extracts
Herbs are concentrated and powdered for ease of use. The herbs are simply dissolved in water. Granules are a very convenient way to take herbs, but due to the amount of processing involved in their production, they tend to be more expensive than raw herbs.
Our granules are of the highest quality, produced in Taiwan by KODA pharmaceuticals and KPC.
We use granules for children when appropriate due to the much more palatable nature that many paediatric formulae are available in.
We also have the ability to put granules into capsules, to further deal with the strong taste, if this is an issue.

Pills & Capsules
Famous traditional herbal formulas are processed into capsules and very small tablets or 'patent pills'. Pills and capsules have the advantage of being easy to take. Their strength is less than that of raw herbs or powders, and their flexibility is also limited in that they are set formulas. The latter can be overcome to an extent by combining the use of more than one type of pill or capsule. Dosage can also be adjusted easily to affect the strength of the formula.
