Acupuncture is over 2,500 years old and is based on the Meridian system. This is a network of ‘vessels’ for Qi (chi) and blood flow. Acupuncture points are points along meridians at which we can access certain energetic qualities.
There are 12 Regular Meridians in the body, and 8 Extra Meridians. Qi flows in a continuous circuit through the 12 Regular meridians, with each meridian having a peak time to when the Qi is fullest within that meridian. These 12 Meridians are often tied into an organ system. There are 6 paired organs; Lung/Large Intestine, Heart/Small Intestine, Pericardium/San Jiao (water metabolism), Liver/Gall bladder, Kidney/Bladder, Spleen/Stomach.
Research is continuing into how acupuncture works from a western bio-medical perspective. There is change in the local blood flow, an increase in the body’s natural pain relieving substances and a change in nerve function. This may explain the resulting effect.
There are numerous variations on acupuncture. Here at Bendigo Chinese Medicine, we offer the more commonly known TCM style, as well as Esoteric and Japanese (East-Asian Needle Therapy & Manaka protocols). If you are unsure as to which style of acupuncture will best suit you, your acupuncturist will be able to guide you as to each styles suitability for your specific situation.
